Delegation is a vital skill when it comes to managing a business, but sometimes it’s the hardest thing to put into play.
We all have limited capacity to do everything we need to in just one day. Overloading your schedule will lead to negative consequences, such as limited productivity, little to no engagement from your staff and an overwhelming feeling of stress which you will inevitably carry into your personal life.
Let’s look at a couple of positives from the act of delegating:
⚪ By passing on tasks to members of your team, this empowers them, boosting their confidence and helping them to feel valued. They work harder and you both reap the benefits.
⚪ Sharing the load enables you to free up time to focus on higher-value activities, like growth opportunities, competitor analysis and learning and development tools for your staff and business.
Not sure where to start and what tasks to delegate? Here are some tips:
⚪ Play to your employees’ strengths. What do they excel in; is it organisation? Communication? Highlight areas that you need help with and match them to their capabilities.
⚪ Be clear with your delivery and define what your desired outcome is. When you pass the baton to a colleague, highlighting your boundaries to any task will make them aware of the time frame and limitations – so that they can prepare and deliver accordingly.
⚪ Finally, be prepared for mishaps and be patient. Delegation can be a lengthy process. It takes time, but once it’s in place and working well, it can create opportunity for success from both sides.
Need some help in achieving delegation within your team? Or perhaps you work alone and have no one else to fall back on at the moment!? We would love to hear from you?
